A New Look At Revelation 3:16: Jesus Is Not Even In The Building, Jim Bakker/Charisma

The ‘Prophets’ And ‘Apostles’ Leading The Quiet Revolution In American Religion, Bob Smietana, Christianity Today

CS Commentary: This is a pretty objective article written about the prophetic renewal stream of churches by some outsiders from or for Christianity Today. It covers Bill Johnson, HRock in Pasadena, and some other top names and comments on the Azusa Conference (in Los Angeles) of about a year ago. It makes a few mistakes, for example, I would not agree that the culture is “post-millennial.” But, I can understand how they might come to that conclusion. For the most part, this is an insightful and objective article that should help those inside it look at themselves with new eyes.

CS Commentary: There are some interesting views here, but CS does not agree with everything. Isn’t it possible that prophetic ministers look at the meaning of words and take things a little too far sometimes? That would be our opinion here. Still, a lot of food for thought.

CS Commentary: We thought J. Joyner would completely misinterpret this dream, which we understood just by her first two sentences, but she is courageously and cleverly honest about it. See if you can understand what the dream is about.

CS Evaluation:  September 23, 2017 and Reputed Virgo Astronomical Alignment of Revelation 12

The Best Written Article CS Found on the Virgo Alignment and September 23, 2017, Christopher M. Graney, vofoundation.org

Quote: “So the sun in Virgo, the moon at Virgo’s “feet”, and Jupiter in the constellation are regular occurrences. This leaves the planets at the “head” (the number depending on the number of stars granted to Leo) as the determining factor in making a “momentous” celestial arrangement. Indeed – while various Internet sources speak of the specific celestial arrangement here as being “unique in human history” or “once in 7,000 years” – in fact, it is not unique to September 23, 2017.”

CS Commentary: Though Graney makes some really good points, CS does not agree that just because there are repetitive patterns in the sky that they should not be seen as ‘signs.’ There are cycles and repetitive patterns throughout life and many if not all of them are reflective of God’s design. The heavens even more so.

CS Commentary: CS does not agree with the theology behind this piece, but there is a lot of interesting – if controversial – information here on the manner in which the author believes the astronomical background of Revelation 12 is being fulfilled this year in a way never before. If true, this is significant, not for the rapture of the church or as a signal of the impending end, but as a sign of what God now wants to do in His people. The book of Revelation has always been an invitation of intimacy to the church.

On the other hand, see this piece, from Creation Ministries International, Will The World End On September 23? which is largely skeptical of anything out of the ordinary occurring on September 23.

Also see, the NASA website https://www.nasa.gov/ which has no information that CS could find on the September 23 astronomical alignment, surely a sign that they do not consider it unique or important.

Also see, The World As We Know It Will End September 23 – If You Believe This Doomsday Claim, Kristine Phillips, Washington Post

CS Commentary: Most media reports are focusing on the outlandish claim by David Meade that the rapture will occur on September 23, a claim that CS does not believe and takes no part in. The whole point of the September 23 sign – if it is a true astronomical alignment in keeping with Revelation 12, as some deny – is as a sign of the emerging End Times church, nothing more and nothing less. But if you expect anything of substance to occur, like the rapture or something else, you will most likely be disappointed. When the sign of the star appeared over Bethlehem it was 2 years before Christ was born and 32 years, approximately, before He began His ministry. Signs, the word semeion, in the Greek, are an indication that point to something, in most cases, a future occurrence or event. In this case, anywhere from 2 to 30 years is probably about right, the later more likely than the former. The confluence of events of the last year all point to something coming in the future that is of importance. But as usual, it is only important to those able to see it. As Jesus said so long ago, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (And btw, Jesus was not biased against women, He just used the masculine noun as a generic catch-all for both sexes).

Common Sense Commentary: Here we go again. If the earthquakes don’t get us, the tsunamis will. If the tsunamis don’t get us the volcanic eruptions will. And if the volcanoes don’t get us the next great economic crash will turn us into a third world country. No, CS is not making fun of prophetic pronouncements, or even prescient financial predictions – we believe in the genuine ones….for more, see here

Movies/TV: ‘Bloodline’ on Netflix Exposes The Torture of Family Secrets, Seaborn Hall, The Federalist

Common Sense Commentary: The third season of ‘Bloodline’ continues the mess of the second season: a great premise and a stellar cast, wrapped up in the prison of mediocre writing. Long pregnant silences, muddled indecisive characters and storylines, and the disappearance of a major character that through the first four episodes, at least, is barely explained and that the audience has no time to grieve. Fortunately, series like House of Cards and Turn, which gets better and better each of its three seasons, continue to satisfy because there was little joy in the last summer TV season. ‘Bloodline’ has become a pathetic group of main characters in search of a reason to be on screen. The third and last season goes out with a ‘bang’ all right – its the sound of the show killing itself.
